Hebamme Gerlinde Skupin

Midwifery care means supporting women with comprehensive advice and holistic care from the start of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding. In Germany, every woman has a legal right to midwifery care during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the entirety of the breastfeeding time, and this care is paid for by the health insurance companies according to the Midwife's Scale of Fees.

Exceptions to this are the fee for the partner who attends a Childbirth Preparation Class, a Fee for Materials used at a Birth Center, and the On-Call Fee charged by all midwives who attend their clients' births at home or in the hospital. The Fee should be discussed with the midwife, as no one should have to forgo a home birth for financial reasons.

Should you be privately insured, please ask your insurance company ahead of time whether all fees will be covered. The earlier the contact between midwife and client, the more time remains to allow a relationship of trust to develop during pregnancy. This is especially relevant for planned home births.
