Hebamme Gerlinde Skupin

One of the questions I am most frequently asked is why I became a midwife. It was the opportunity to work independently and the fusion of ancient wisdom, intuition, and modern technology that intrigued me. After reading many books about birth, a hospital internship, 3 years of midwifery training at the Neuköllner Krankenhaus in Berlin, and a short stint at the Urban Krankenhaus, I landed in a Midwifery Practice in Wilmersdorf where we attended births both at home and in the Practice. Here I had come full circle to follow the whole childbearing process: I cared for pregnant women giving antenatal advice and care for problems and discomfort, taught antenatal classes, assisted at births, visited the family in the postpartum time, and at Postpartum Fitness Classes I even got to see the babies grow and develop! One year later I started out in private practice with this holistic concept of care.

That was over 20 years ago. I am now married and have a son of my own. After many years I've now been in Zehlendorf. What hasn't changed is my love of my job, and my desire to provide holistic and natural care and the opportunity to have a baby on one's own terms, to support women in having a self-determined pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding time. Through further training and continuing education I have specialized in natural healing methods and homeopathy for the childbearing year. However, most of all I have learned from the women and children I have cared for, and so I continue to learn every day.
